My maternal grandfather Lawrence Rawcliffe farmed on Longridge Fell from Bradley Hall near Chipping and the Rawcliffes were good friends of the Berrys, with whom they eventually intermarried. My mother Ruth Rawcliffe married a diplomat and as a result I was brought up all over the world, but when visiting her family in Lancashire I was often taken to visit Hannah Berry in Grove Lodge (?) opposite the mill in Chipping. What a magnificent woman she was, with a great shock of white hair – I remember her well. I have a rush-bottomed Berry stool given me as a wedding present by her son Frank Berry, and also two Utility chairs probably made by Berrys which I inherited from my mother’s sister Eunice Rawcliffe. I am still in touch with Barbara Huck, nee Berry. I was very sorry to learn of the closure to Berrys’ works.
