Hand Spinning

Children from Brabin’s and St Mary’s enjoyed an intriguing afternoon with hand spinners Natalie and Pam.

Children  learnt about the  process of carding which is done to straighten the fibres and lay them parallel  ready to be twisted together by spinning.

Children using a drop spindle .

They discovered how hand spinning would have taken place in many  homes  using a drop spindle or a spinning wheel prior to the building of the  water powered Arkwright Mill in Chipping.
